Last Thursday, every member of the school community participated in the Thomas Jefferson Symposium to Advance Research (tjSTAR). The extensive all-day schedule of events provided opportunities to showcase demonstrations, hands-on activities, lectures and student presentations. Many luminaries from government and the private business sector also participated.
Lecturers included professionals such as Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Commanding Officer of the Naval Research Laboratory Paul Stewart and Chief Technology Officer of Lockheed Martin Corporation Ray Johnson.

Secretary of Education addresses challenges to Virginia’s schools by Arvin Ahmadi

The culminating activity for tjSTAR’s day-long symposium last Thursday was a keynote address given by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan He addressed the student body on topics ranging from science education to social responsibility.
Duncan emphasized the enormous role students at this school have to not only be role models for their peers throughout their country, but to also be socially responsible with the opportunities they are afforded.
