Blue Ribbon School award added to recent accolades

Jefferson was selected as a 2009 National Blue Ribbon School for the first time in its history on Sept. 15. U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced the 314 schools chosen for this award, the highest honor the Department of Education can bestow upon schools.
To Principal Evan Glazer, just being nominated was an honor in itself.
“We were excited that the commonwealth of Virginia recommended us because they, in my opinion, are taking notice of some of the unique things we’re doing here,” Glazer said.

School community pulls together after death of junior

The junior bleachers were a sea of black on Sept. 29, contrasting with the brighter colors filling the others. Seniors, sophomores and freshmen were dressed as characters from every video game imaginable, while the juniors stood apart " commemorating the passing of fellow classmate Sebastian Hamilton on the evening of Sept. 26.

Budget cuts transform county schools

Maura Gaudio, a senior at Langley High School, arrived at her AP Government class on the first day of school to find the room packed with students. Desks were crammed into the room, and there still wasn’t enough space: one student had to sit at the teacher’s desk. The effects of last year’s budget cuts were right in front of her eyes.
